INSTRUMENT RATINGS

The Instrument Rating (IR) Skill Test Course is of 50 hour duration with an additional two hour allowance to cover the final Skill Test. 40 hours are completed on an FNPT II Aerosim Simulator with a fully equipped IFR panel and a Bell 206 Jetranger configuration (shown below).

The Aerosim is equipped with the latest optical scanning technology: Optical Crew Resource Analyser (OCRA) is a fully integrated eye tracking device, allowing the determination and instant correction of the trainee’s scan patterns and focus, by almost seeing through the pilot’s eyes. Not only is this capability of significant benefit during training, but provides invaluable feedback during debriefing as the entire training session is stored for analysis by instructor and student.

Interacting with the OCRA is “the Blink” which allows the instructor in real time to make any given gauge light up for a second to attract the trainees attention. With this feature, a proper scanning pattern can be demonstrated to the student much more effectively, making IR training easier for both student and instructor alike.

The remaining 10 hours are flown on the Multi-engine Aerospatiale AS355F1/F2 Twin Squirrel, and upon completion of the course, the student is presented for the IR Skill Test which is conducted in the AS355 by a JAA Flight Examiner, from Cranfield Airport.
