Ground School dates 2010

The Modular Training programme for Helicopters offers a recognised alternative for those wishing to progress to a professional licence but unable to complete the Integrated Course. The College offers a full set of JAA Approved training modules starting on published dates throughout the year, to cover both the theoretical knowedge and the practical flying requirements. On completion of training, the student can apply for the issue of either a CPLH or, having completed the Instrument Rating Skill Test Module, a CPLH/IR. This may be referred to as a Frozen ATPLH, as the student will have studied theoretical knowledge to this level.

Applicants for CPLH Modular programme must have at least an ICAO recognised Private Pilot's Licence for Helicopters (PPLH) and a minimum flying experience of 155 hours, in order to be able to join the Theoretical Knowledge course. Before commencing flight training for the Skill Tests, the students must have passed all the JAA Theory examinations.

On completion of the full set of training modules and with the CPLH/IR (Frozen ATPLH) issued, the graduate can apply for the position of First Officer with any European multi-crew helicopter operator (subject to employment eligibility). A popular option remains to add a Flight Instructor Rating and then work as a PPLH Instructor in order to gain invaluable flying experience, before moving on either to single or multi-crew public transport work. It is possible to train for a Flight Instructor Rating having obtained a CPLH, but before completing the Instrument Rating Skill Test module.

Those considering this option should be aware that they must have a minimum total flying experience of 300 hours before being able to start Flight Instructor training.

Entry Requirements

Those wishing to enrol on a course and funding their own training must meet the following standards:

Course Schedule

The 48 week CPLH course timetable is as follows:

Weeks 01-26 Theoretical Knowledge Training in the classroom
Weeks 27-48 Flight Training - Phases 1 and 2

Theoretical Knowledge Training
Full Time Classroom Course at Cabair Modular in Bournemouth (European Pilot Training Academy)

The course is completed over nineteen weeks (650 hours of tuition) and covers the full JAA ATPL theoretical knowledge syllabus. There are regular start dates throughout the year with class size restricted to a maximum of 25 students. The Instructors are experienced in teaching both the Integrated and Modular programmes and regularly achieve first time pass rates for this particular course which exceed 80%. CCAT has produced a full set of training manuals and documentation to support the lectures which are all included within the course fee.

The course is divided into Part 1, which is of 12 weeks duration (6 subjects) and Part 2, seven weeks duration (8 subjects), for which the individual subjects are detailed below. The appropriate JAA examinations are scheduled to follow each Part and are conducted at local examination centres. In order to progress to the Flying Skill Tests it is a mandatory requirement that all fourteen papers have been passed (pass mark 75% for each examination). Candidates are allowed four attempts at each individual paper, over six separate sittings.

Students for Helicopter Licences are currently trained to an interim syllabus fully agreed and endorsed by the CAA. Separate tuition is given in the specialist area of Principles of Flight, and students are not required to attempt a Performance examination. All other subjects are taught to the same syllabus as for Aeroplane students.

Theoretical Knowledge Training
Distance Learning

This JAA Approved course has been specially produced by CCAT Instructors based on their experience of the JAA ATPL theory syllabus. The fourteen examination subjects have been separated into 4 dedicated phases, each designed to be completed in 13 weeks of study to prepare the student for the JAA examinations. Providing that continuity is maintained over the 4 phases, the course is designed to be completed in 52 weeks. Each of the phases will deal with either 3 or 4 different subjects over 135 hours of study time. Start packs will include the training manuals appropriate to the subjects to be studied, a number of self-assessment tests and up to 4 Progress Tests.

A phase schedule will be provided to ensure that the correct progress is made through the course and that the Progress Tests are completed and returned for tutor assessment in good time. A dedicated telephone/fax line and email address are available to all course subscribers. The distance element of each phase is scheduled to be completed in 10 weeks. This is immediately followed by a 1 week residential (mandatory attendance) session with a further week for final revision at home. The JAA examinations will be sat during the 13th week of each phase. On completion of the examinations the next phase will be available to start.

Flight Training

The Flight School is located next to the Air Traffic Control Tower on Cranfield Airport. There is a fully equipped Operations Centre with briefing and planning facilities, with dedicated space available to Integrated course helicopter students. The airport is located on a four hundred acre site offering ample space for both fixed wing and helicopter training. There is an 1800 metre runway with Instrument Landing System (ILS) and two Beacon approaches. Special areas are set aside for sloping ground , confined area and low-level operations training.

The Flight Instructors are well experienced in teaching the Integrated course and have a minimum of 1,000 hours instructional time. The Chief Helicopter Instructor has several thousand hours of Public Transport/Charter and Instructional time and all students benefit enormously from this experience.

CCAT has a fleet of 3 Robinson R-22 Betas (single engine piston), one Bell 206 Jet Ranger (single engine turbine) and two Aerospatiale AS-355F Twin Squirrels (multi engine turbine). The turbine engine helicopters are also utilised on Public Transport operations by Cabair Helicopters. On the CPL(H) course, the Robinson R-22 is used for the entire syllabus. The Bell 206 is available as an additional option in order to complete a five hour turbine conversion, and the AS-355F is further available for multi engine turbine conversions.

The composition of the Flight Phases, as shown in the preceding course schedule, is as follows:

Phase 1
12.5 hours on R-22B: Basic dual instruction to first solo flight.

Phase 2
122.5 hours on R-22B: Covers all syllabus requirements for dual and solo flight training in General Handling, Navigation, Instrument and Night flying.

3 hours on R-22B Commercial Pilot’s Licence Skill Test.

The Modules do not include the following:

1. JAA Examination, Flight Test and Licence Issue Fees

These are currently £780 for the first attempt at 13 Theory examinations (£60 per examination), £691 for the final CPL(H) Skill Test and £210 for CPL(H) licence issue. There is no VAT on JAA charges. The student will be expected to pay these fees to CCAT when bookings are made. Additional charges will be made for all further attempts if necessary.

2. Accommodation. There are various options available as shown on our Accommodation page.
